UN Headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland. My first Chess Challenge began today… I had practiced the night before so I was prepared for the Game. Yesterday I asked the Ambassador if she would be willing to play a game with me in aid of 3 charities and the We Want Peace movement. She agreed to play chess and the UK mission to the UN were kind enough to allow Ambassador Karen Pierce to accept my challenge. Karen said she would do this as her personal contribution to support the cause. We played today and as we had very little time, she decided the first game would decide the winner. We picked a cool spot in the ‘Luminairum ‘– a magical indoor sculpture, which has been erected in the UN gardens this week by the UK Mission to celebrate 60 years of the International Declaration of Human rights. We sat on the floor in a blue lit bubble and played quietly with the sound of meditative music – it was a unique experience! Everyone was coming to stare at us and take photos, which we weren’t expecting. The good news is … I won the first game, which means that we won £300 for ‘Lose to win’. As we had a bit of extra time Karen challenged me to a second ‘friendly’ game. This really was a challenge as all my soldiers were taken and I was only left with my King trying to survive in the jungle. After 25 steps he was captured alive and she won! It was very kind of Karen to take the time out of her busy schedule and to generously support my Lose to Win challenge. She is a great sport, Thank You. You too can either challenge me to a game of chess or can pick up your own challenge today to support ‘Lose to Win’.
Alert welcomes acclaimed musician and peace advocate as patron Date : Thursday, 23 May, 2013 – International Alert We are pleased to welcome acclaimed musician and peace advocate Emmanuel Jal as our newest patron. “I am proud to be a patron of International Alert, which has been working alongside local people to bring peace and prevent violence for nearly thirty years”, Emmanuel says. Emmanuel was born in war-torn southern Sudan on an unknown date in the early 1980s, into the life of a child solider. For nearly five years, he was a “child warrior”, put into battle carrying an AK-47 that was taller than he was. Through unbelievable struggles, Emmanuel managed to survive and emerge as a recording artist, achieving worldwide acclaim for his unique style of hip hop with its message of peace and reconciliation, born out of his personal experiences. In 2005 he released his first album, Gua (“peace” in his native Nuer tongue). The title track was broadcast across Africa and became a number one hit in Kenya. Emmanuel has gone on to release three more studio albums, including Ceasefire, Warchild and See Me Mama. In 2008 a full-length documentary was released about Emmanuel’s life, entitled Warchild. It won 12 film festival awards worldwide, including the audience choice award at the prestigious Tribeca film festival. The same year, Emmanuel’s autobiography of the same name was published by Little Brown. Despite his accomplishments in music and film, one of Emmanuel’s biggest passions is Gua Africa, the charity he founded to work with individuals, families and communities to help them overcome the effects of war and poverty. “My own goal is to raise awareness about peace”, Emmanuel says. “The right to live equally, the right to freedom and justice, and where every child has hope for their future in a safe environment.” In 2013 Emmanuel was awarded the Calgary Peace Prize and the Humanitarian Award from the Hunt Institute. Watch his 2009 TED talk, ‘The music of a war child’, here. Find out more about our patrons, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, here.
Press Release Human Rights in Art; the UK in a unique partnership between arts and diplomacy sets down a challenge to think creatively about how to implement human rights around the world United Nations, Geneva, Switzerland, Monday 10 – Friday 14 June 2013 The UK Mission to the United Nations in partnership with British company ‘Architects of Air’ will install a 1000 square metre inflatable ‘Luminarium’ sculpture in the grounds of the Palais des Nations, the global centre of human rights and the headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva. Pentalum, UK artist Alan Parkinson’s latest sculpture will challenge diplomats, UN officials, school children and communities to think more creatively about how to make the work of the Human Rights Council in Geneva better understood around the world. It is a dynamic way to show why human rights matter and Geneva’s role in making sure everyone has opportunity to realise them. The walk-through sculpture is designed by Parkinson to generate a sense of reflection and create a shared space for discussion of the fundamental importance of human rights to all countries. The space will connect people from different walks of life, from Government policy makers to grass roots movements, to build a common push for human rights to be realised. It will be opened by Miss Karen Pierce CMG, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom Mission to the United Nations, the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Director General of the UN in Geneva during the final week of the 23rd session of the Human Rights Council. The week-long art installation will be filled with activities and events including a live hip hop performance by former child soldier and now international music and Hollywood artist Emmanuel Jal and multilingual audio recordings of why human rights matter to people around the world. Local school children will take part in workshops around their rights and government representatives will be invited to debate Human Rights Council resolutions. It will culminate in a mass recital from memory of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights led by UK artist Monica Ross (of An Act of Memory) involving UN agencies, local dignitaries and civil society groups. This final ‘act of memory’ will reinforce why human rights must be kept in everyone’s minds and focus the world’s attention on how to realise human rights for all, everywhere, without discrimination. This project is part of the UK Mission to the UN in Geneva’s work to promote and protect the human rights of all people and to ensure that human rights remain at the heart of the UN’s work.
